Pre-installed Scripts and Security

We are activating many new pre-installed scripts now available in cPanel. It is extremely important for you and/or your customers keep the following security tips in mind:

• Keep scripts updated with most current releases to avoid security compromises. This can be easily done through your cPanel if using the pre-installed cPanel.
• Keep your account password secure, ie don't give out and if you do change it as soon as possible afterward, use at least 8 characters, mixed upper, lower, alpha and numeric with no dictionary words. Accounts with easy passwords are easily compromised.
• Do not set your directories to be World Writable, as that opens the door for easy way to get compromised. If you have a script that requires world writable (chmod 777) directories, ask our technicians if there are other alternatives. Enabling phpsuexec on the servers may provide other alternatives.

The Following pre-installed scripts are activated on the legacy servers (all vosn.net servers). We have set up a section on our forums called Script Updates to announce updates and security issues on scripts, including 3rd party scripts, such as vBulletin.

Change to our Shared Server Terms of Service

With the addition of so much disk space, there are some changes that need to be made in order to maintain quality performance on the servers.

Email storage by itself is not a problem, however if you have a large amount of email in your inbox and access it through web mail, server performance can suffer. Consequently, we have set a 100 MB limit on our email POP inboxes. This should allow plenty of room to store your email. If you travel and/or need to view your email online, we recommend using an email client software (e.g. Outlook, Outlook Express) to set the email to be left on the server for 'x' number of days (as required for your travels or circumstances), but use the email client to download your email for retention purposes.

We have made no changes regarding the size of your databases (which many hosts have done when increasing their disk quotas), but large databases can impact your application and server performance, so use good judgment and keep your databases trimmed regularly. This type of impact is covered in our Acceptable Use Policy, but maintaining a busy database is usually necessary to ensure your application runs smoothly anyway.
